The return of a dance deity

Would there be a better way to celebrate the life and art of a great dancer than dance itself? The Hamburg Ballet stages a powerful tribute to the legendary Vaslav Nijinsky, regarded as the most phenomenal dancer of all time.

Hailed by Dance Magazine as “the most ambitious project in the ballet world”, this glamorous piece is created by the master choreographer John Neumeier, a long-time admirer and leading expert on the Russian dancer. Mixing art and life on stage, Nijinsky is a moving homage in two acts evoking the artistic circle and some of the greatest roles of a prodigy who was once nicknamed “the God of Dance”. Interpreted to the sound of an eclectic pallet of composers, from the Romantic energy of Chopin and Schumann to the exoticism of Rimsky-Korsakov and Shostakovich’s enigmatic tunes, this powerful production focuses on the pivotal moment when Nijinsky began to sink into the madness that would eventually lead to his ending.

Having conquered its place amongst the finest dance companies in the world, the Hamburg Ballet has built an extensive repertoire under Neumeier’s visionary direction since 1973. The master chorographer has since been praised to have set a new standard, both technically and expressively, having achieved an unparalleled aura over decades of prolific work.

As we shall witness, Neumeier’s ingenious recreation of Nijinsky’s multifaceted persona is a clear display of the choreographer’s wit. An elegant ballet whose richness and emotional complexity will leave balletomanes with a craving desire to see it again!
